What's docomomo korea?
We DOCOMOMO Korea has come to existence
with  the foundingsymposium which was held On
May 2, 2003.
DOCOMOMO Korea is embarking once again to
serve as a 'corner stone' in architectural arena at
home and abroad.
The acronym DOCOMOMO stands for DOcumentation and COnservation of buildings,
sites and neighborhoods of the MOdern MOvement. The organization is dedicated to the
study of important works of modern movement architecture and urban planning, which was
one of the key trends in the 20th century, and seeks to preserve and document such buildings and sites.
The DOCOMOMO members represent cultural artists, architects, engineers, government officials and citizens as well as architectural historians who support the idea of protecting
modern movement buildings and sites.
Officially launched in 1990 at the international conference organized by Eindhoven University
of Technology, in The Netherlands, DOCOMOMO champions 'DOCOMOMO Charter'
of Eindhoven Declaration, which was adopted at the meeting. DOCOMOMO International's
Secretariat -or headquarters- was located in Delft, The Netherlands, at the Delft University
of Technology. In September, 2002, the Secretariat was moved to Paris, France and
operates under the auspices of the Paris Museum of Architecture.
Currently, Professor Maristella Casciato at University of Rome serves as a chairman for
DOCOMOMO International. There are now DOCOMOMO working parties and
chapters in over 40 countries with Western Europe and North America being the most active
regions. Each working party and chapter is respected for its independency and uniqueness.
We hope will serve as an opportunity to lay the foundation for linking significant cultural
heritages of modern period in Europe, US, Japan and Southeast Asia. In addition, we
are poised to commence a movement where, in cooperation with culture professionals,
we preserve and record our important cultural heritages from modern period.
Let me quote a phrase from Bible. According to Ezekiel 37:1-14, 'restoration' means 'putting
breath o a dry bone'. Maybe our modern movement buildings and sites were 'dry bones'.
Being destroyed with our negligence, only a frame has left. Here restoration means putting
vitality to a building by making flesh and covering with skin to the remaining tendon.
Now the Korean government has finally recognized the importance of modern architecture
and established a Modern Cultural Heritage Division under its Cultural Properties
Administration.
Furthermore, the government is implementing a cultural heritage register system. Moreover,
scholars have also shown interest in this movement. I believe the process of promoting vitality
in modern architecture has begun in earnest.
In terms of world history, Korea's history of architecture has remained on the sidelines.
Although now the line dividing the center and peripherals has been disappeared, we may
continuously be left as an outsider if we fail to spur our research efforts. Even though belated,
the main driver to launch DOCOMOMO Korea was our strong committment to emerge as a
key player in this global movement.
I would like to ask for your continued support and contribution. I wish you the best of luck.
Thank you.
